About me

I’ve supported dozens of novelists and travel writers in my career, from nervous self-publishers to professional authors with secure publishing deals.

I’ve worked on historical romances and spy thrillers, expat memoirs and pilgrimage diaries, experimental fiction and commercial chart-toppers.

And now I’d like to work with you.

Honest, constructive feedback

Perhaps your novel sags in the middle, fizzles out at the end, has too many characters or too little dialogue.

Maybe you’re a really good storyteller but not so hot on punctuation and syntax.

As an editor, my job is to give honest, constructive feedback on your manuscript.

I do that with empathy and discretion. I take the time to listen to you and understand what your book needs so that I can guide you to the next stage.

Trained and qualified

As an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), I’m committed to maintaining the highest editorial standards and keeping up to date with new developments in publishing.

I’ve earned editorial qualifications from the CIEP and the Publishing Training Centre, and I have a degree in English Literature and the Dramatic Arts. I’m a contributing author on the CIEP’s online Introduction to Fiction Editing course.

I’m also a Partner Member of the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), the advocacy organisation for self-publishers.

Former Rough Guide author specialising in Southeast Asia

Editor, author, traveller

I know how much hard graft goes into writing a book and how crucial it is to have an editor who respects that.

For two decades I was an author myself, writing and researching guidebooks to Thailand and Indonesia for the travel-guide publisher Rough Guides. The Rough Guide to Thailand won the Thomas Cook Best Guidebook Award.

Back in the last century, I lived in Japan, where I was the editor of listings magazine Kansai Time Out. Right now, I’m learning Mandarin.

No surprise then that I love working on fiction in translation and on novels and travel books with a strong sense of place. When I’m not editing or reading, I’m usually hiking or travelling, preferably in Asia or the Scottish Highlands.

Anyone who has completed a novel knows the loneliness of the long-form writer. Having Lucy waiting for me at the end of that process was and continues to be a dream. When her notes arrive in my inbox, the thrill is right up there with a child on Christmas morning. They are always thorough, thoughtful and spot on… and she gets my jokes. Rewriting with her notes by my side is an absolute luxury. Quite simply, I love Lucy.

Lucy is thoughtful and sensitive when providing feedback and advice. She is an extremely thorough, professional and highly experienced editor. I was so grateful for her assistance with my first book, I’ve now asked her to work with me on my second. I couldn’t do it without her.
